There isn’t really a bad time to visit Puerto Escondido, but there are better and worse times depending on what you’re actually here for.
November through April is the dry season and the most popular stretch, for good reason. Days are consistently sunny, humidity is lower, and it’s the best window for anyone prioritising beach time over everything else. December and January get busiest around the holidays, so book ahead if those dates matter to you.
May through October is the wet season, and it’s more misunderstood than it deserves to be. Rain tends to arrive in short, heavy bursts, usually overnight or late afternoon, rather than settling in for the day. Mornings are frequently clear. It’s quieter, greener, noticeably cheaper, and the surf at Zicatela is often at its best, since bigger swells tend to arrive with the season.
If surfing is the priority, May through September is generally considered the strongest stretch for serious swell. If you’re after the calmest water for swimming at Carrizalillo, the dry months from December to April are the safer bet.
Shoulder months — April to May and October to November — are worth a specific mention, since they tend to offer dry-season weather without dry-season crowds or prices.
Temperature barely changes across the year here; it’s consistently warm, which is part of why our homes are built the way they are — open-air, fully screened, with ceiling and floor fans throughout rather than closed-up air conditioning fighting the climate.
Whichever season you land on, the beaches, food, and pace of Puerto Escondido hold up. It’s less about finding the “right” month and more about matching the season to what you actually want from the trip — quieter and greener, or busier and drier.
Whatever time of year suits you, both our homes are built to handle the heat comfortably. Check availability for your preferred dates.
