Oaxaca state has one of the deepest pottery traditions in Mexico, and a handful of small studios around Puerto Escondido run drop-in sessions where you can actually get your hands in the clay rather than just watch someone else work it. It’s a good half-day option for the one afternoon a tropical downpour rolls through, or simply when you’ve had enough sun and want something to do with your hands instead. No experience needed — someone will show you the basics and you’ll leave with a piece to take home, or have it fired and shipped later.
Sessions typically run two to three hours and are best booked a day ahead since spots are limited. Late morning tends to be quieter than afternoon, and the studio space itself stays cool and covered regardless of what the weather’s doing outside, which is really the point.
Most studios are a short taxi from the cabaña rather than a walk. Wear something you don’t mind getting a bit of clay on, and bring cash — most don’t take cards.
