Playa Zicatela at Sunset

Zicatela is why Puerto Escondido shows up on a surfer’s map at all. Locals call it the Mexican Pipeline, and the swell here is serious — this is a spot for watching more than swimming, unless you already know what you’re doing in heavy water. What makes it worth the walk isn’t just the surf, though. It’s the sunset. The beach runs long and mostly straight, so the light comes in low and uninterrupted, and by 6pm half the town seems to have found a spot on the sand or at one of the beach bars along Calle del Morro to watch it go down.

Come mid-afternoon if you want to watch the surfers work the barrels while the light’s still hard and bright, or arrive closer to sunset for the slower version — a beer in hand, sand still warm underfoot. Either way, don’t expect a quiet swim; this is Zicatela’s whole personality, and it’s better to just let it be loud.

It’s about fifteen minutes on foot from the cabaña, through La Rinconada. Flip-flops are fine but bring water — there’s very little shade on the walk down.
