Carrizalillo is the cove you go to when Zicatela’s swell feels like too much. Tucked between two rock headlands, it’s small, sheltered, and calm enough for actual swimming rather than just watching from the sand. You’ll get there by a staircase of around 170 steps cut into the cliff — worth every one of them once you’re down. There’s good beginner surf here too, plus a handful of family-run palapa restaurants right on the sand where you can order a fish and stay for hours without anyone rushing you along.
Go early, before 10am, if you want the cove close to empty and the light doing that flat gold thing over the water. By midday it fills in with a relaxed mix of surf lessons, families, and people who’ve simply found their spot for the day. Sunset is the other good window — the headlands catch the colour and the crowd thins again once the light drops.
It’s a twenty minute walk from the cabaña, or a short taxi if the afternoon heat has you beat. Bring cash for a beach chair and a coconut, and don’t rush the walk back up.
